Maybe you’ve watched the Netflix adaptation of #GIRLBOSS (if not, you should – it was really well done!), or maybe you’ve read the popular book yourself. We’ve all read a book that makes our eyes light up. Whether it’s something romantic or downright inspirational, there’s something about words printed on a page that will always draw us in. I’m an avid reader because I love the way that stories can present new ideas and take your mind to a faraway place. But nothing beats a good, no-nonsense non-fiction book, and #GIRLBOSS is exactly that.
Whether you love her or hate her, Sophia Amoruso is full of great advice for women looking to step up and dive in to the business world. Even if you have no interest in the fashion industry, her story is one of those uplifting tales that makes you want to adopt your boss lady persona and take over the world.
If you haven’t heard of it, here’s what Amazon has to say about the book:
The first thing Sophia Amoruso sold online wasn’t fashion – it was a stolen book. She spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and dumpster diving. By age twenty-two, she had resigned herself to employment, but was still broke, directionless, and checking IDs in the lobby of an art school–a job she’d taken for the health insurance. It was in that lobby that Sophia decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay. Flash forward eight years to today, and she’s the Founder, CEO and Creative Director of Nasty Gal, a $100+ million online fashion retailer with over 350 employees. Sophia’s never been a typical CEO, or a typical anything, and she’s written #GIRLBOSS for girls like her: outsiders (and insiders) seeking a unique path to success, even when that path is windy as all hell and lined with naysayers.
Basically, Sophia Amoruso started from the bottom. After eight years of hard work, she turned a dinky eBay store into a multi-million dollar business. By that description, you’d expect the book would be full of foolproof tips to guide you on your path for success – and you’d be right.
I devoured this book from cover-to-cover in a bout a day and a half. If you factor in my work schedule, that means I spent all my free time for almost two days with my nose stuck in this book. And you know what? It might have been the best thing I ever did.
Before I opened this book, I had only an inkling of a goal in my head: I wanted to start a blog. I had a basic sense of what I wanted to do, but that was about it. It was only after completing the book that I got up off my butt and started hustling.
Sophia’s advice is perfect for girls looking to spark that little fire within them and turn it into a full-on inferno. In a sense, this book was designed to get you in the hustling mood.
The most inspiring parts of this book are Sophia’s anecdotes about life before NastyGal. She built the business from the ground up after running around town stealing anything she could get her hands on and eating bagels out of a dumpster. In other words: if she can clean up her act and become the CEO of a major company, so can you.
This book was relatable from beginning to end. As I flipped through the pages and stared at the cute little doodles, I could picture myself in Sophia’s shoes as she rose higher and higher through hard work and dedication to her business. I was so inspired that I started setting up my blog the very next day.
Words of Wisdom
This is one of those books you can’t help but bookmark. There are so many quotes and exclamations that we could all benefit from reading over and over again. I pulled a few of my favorites to share with you.
The only way to support a revolution is to make your own.
You create the world, blink by blink. It is entirely yours to discover and yours to create.
Confidence is more attractive than anything you could put on your body.
If you believe that what you’re doing will have positive results, it will—even if it’s not immediately obvious.
She gets what she wants because she works for it.
You combine hard work, creativity, and self-determination, and things start to happen.
The Takeaway: Anatomy of a #GIRLBOSS
This book taught me how to push past negativity and pull myself together so I could reach my goals. Here are my main takeaways:
Ignore what other people have to say about you.
People are always going to have an opinion about the things you do and say. You need to be able to look past their criticisms and push on. One day when you’re successful, they’ll regret ever saying that you couldn’t do it. As long as you believe in yourself, it doesn’t matter what other people think.
Be confident. Be your own idol.
Spending all your time wishing you were someone else is a waste of your potential. We all have those times where we just want to wish our life away and step into someone else’s shoes. But it’s important to know that you are amazing just the way you are, and there is no reason you can’t create the life you always dream about. You just need to take your head out of the clouds and get working.
Never be afraid of failure.
With a blog called Success Sense, you might think I sound like a total hypocrite right now. But the truth is that no matter how many tools you have under your belt, there will come a time that you have to face failure. In fact, you will fail about a million times in your life. Don’t shy away from it. Take it in stride and use it as a learning opportunity.
As Sophia states in the book, there is a silver lining in everything. Even on your worst days, the key to success is to be able to look past the negative and see all the great things that are lying underneath. You may feel hopeless or want to give up, but keep pushing. You can create your dream job, reach your goals, and hustle your way to the top as long as you think positively.
Fortune favors action. Without hard work, your goals will quickly slip away. No one is going to hand things to you. Even if it feels like something is simply falling into your lap, it usually means you worked pretty hard to get there. Give yourself some credit when it’s due, but remember to always try your best and work hard.
What are You Waiting for?
If you haven’t read it yet, I would suggest picking up a copy of this book as soon as possible. It’s equal parts entertaining and uplifting, and it will inspire you to take those risks you’ve been fearing for so long.
